Consultant Clinical and Forensic Psychologist

Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist

 

Professor Long specialises in assessment and treatment of adults with psychological difficulties.  He is a Chartered Psychologist who is registered with the Health Professions Council and the British Psychological Society (BPS).

 

Professor Long is a British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy (BABCP) accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist.  His clinical interests include acute anxiety-related disorders, depression, addictions, eating disorders, stress and post-traumatic stress disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorders.  He is a member of the Society of Expert Witnesses and a registered Expert Witness with the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL).  Medical legal practice includes personal injury and trauma assessments.

 

Professor Long also provides consultancy on clinical treatment and its evaluation to healthcare organisations.

 

In addition to his outpatient practice at ACT, he is Honorary Professor of Psychology at the University of Birmingham and Visiting Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry.  He was previously employed at St Andrew's Healthcare as Associate Director of Psychology and Psychological Therapies, and as Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Northampton.  Prior to that, he was Clinical Director of the Acute Psychiatry Division at St Andrew's Healthcare and has held a number of roles in the National Health Service.

 

Professor Long is a Fellow of both the BPS and the BABCP, and has published widely on clinical issues and their treatments.  He was the winner of the Laing and Buisson Independent Healthcare Award for Healthcare Outcomes in 2010.

Dr Wheatley specialises in assessment and treatment of children, adolescents and adults with psychological difficulties. He qualified as a Psychologist in 1989 and is a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society (BPS); registered with the Health Professions Council (HPC) and an accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist (British Association of Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapists).

 

His clinical interests include anxiety related disorders, depression, relationship difficulties, stress and trauma, substance use, and obsessive compulsive disorders.

 

In addition, his forensic interests include expert witness reports, working with offenders and family law matters.

 

In addition to his out-patient practice at ACT, Dr Wheatley was previously employed by St Andrew's Healthcare in Northampton as the Lead Psychologist for the Adolescent Service. Prior to that he was employed by Partnerships in Care at Kneesworth House Hospital in Hertfordshire and prior to that by Northampton Health Authority. He has published in the areas of adolescent mental health, mental illness, substance use and trauma.

 

Dr Wheatley also delivers training and development to healthcare and social care organisations involved in the care of young people. In addition he provides psychological assessment and treatment to individuals and organisations regarding work-related stress.

Shan Premachandra has 10 years' experience working in psychology for the National Health Service (NHS) and 5 years working for the private sector including charities. She offers compassionate and individualised therapeutic sessions, providing a warm and non-judgemental environment. Shan is currently completing Doctorial research in the field of Counselling Psychology.

 

Shan has a wide range of experience, offering therapy for presenting issues such as Depression, Low Mood, Anxiety, Phobias, Bereavement, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, Trauma and work-related issues.

 

Time is dedicated to preparing ahead of each session, so that you gain the most from each meeting. Depending on your needs and preferences, sessions can be short-term or long-term. Psychotherapy sessions help to discover underlying patterns and emotions and their influence on ourselves, our interactions with others, and life in general. Using this approach, we can work through difficulties and improve well-being.

 

In her clinical work, Shan also utilises Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Mindfulness and Cognitive and Behavioural approaches.

Shan also provides life coaching, mentoring and consultation to organisations, and development of enabling environments.  She also offers supervision for trainee psychotherapists and mental health practitioners.
